Overview

The Executive Director, Project & Portfolio Management will oversee the PPM function. She/He will have accountability to establish best practices and tools for key program team processes such as planning, decision making, communication, and risk management. This individual will partner closely with key functional leaders to advance assets (pre-clinical through IND and early clinical development) and maximize the potential of the early pipeline. S/he also will help to strengthen and integrate program and portfolio activities across our development portfolio.

 

The Executive Director, PPM will partner with various functions to implement individual leadership and team focused development programs to ensure strong team performance in a highly matrixed team environment. She/he will drive portfolio-level activities, including management of product and portfolio governance reviews, resource planning and activity modeling, and setting and reporting of corporate goals. The Executive Director, PPM will report to the COO and work in close partnership with the Clinical Development, Research, Commercial, Finance, and Technical Operations functional leads.

Responsibilities

  • Flex between scientific / technical details and big-picture strategic planning.
  • Ensures robust program strategy and provide leadership of multidisciplinary teams of functional experts focused on the end-to-end development cycle to secure regulatory approval and market access maximize commercial value and drive optimal life cycle management of assets, including external innovation strategies.
  • Leads informed decision-making through disciplined prioritization, data analytics, and real-time reporting to synthesize and integrate the enterprise portfolio.
  • Maximizes value of Celularity’s external partnerships and internal assets through best-in-class project and program management.
  • Provides quantitative valuations for prospective product opportunities and standard portfolio metrics/analyses at Program & Portfolio Committee (PPC) meetings to ensure data-driven decision-making in the context of Celularity’s existing Development portfolio.
  • Supports the organization to make value creation a core principle of pipeline progression and lifecycle management to maximize the value of Celularity’s products and portfolio.
  • Partners with functional leaders to define and execute program strategies, drive teams to effective governance decisions within Celularity’s operating model, and proactively identify and escalate risks, gaps, and challenges; works productively and collaboratively with teams to develop scenarios and solve problems.
  • Coach and manage a team of project and program managers supporting cross-functional program teams for early and late-stage clinical assets

Qualifications

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Significant breadth of experience across drug development including non-clinical, clinical, regulatory, CMC and commercial functions.
  • Experience managing program leads and/or managers and leading high-functioning cross-functional teams
  • Very strong interpersonal skills with ability to lead, engage, focus, negotiate and resolve conflict internally and externally across multiple stakeholders to identify and resolve key issues.
  • Strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Combines attention to detail with big-picture strategic perspective.
  • Act as a point of escalation for early pipeline issues and risks.
  • Can navigate complexity and ambiguity to adapt to evolving priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Manages project progress against approved timelines and milestones, and for ensuring adherence to agreed-upon team objectives and deliverables
  • Identifies bottlenecks, surface issues and proactively drive for their resolution. Lead contingency planning efforts.
  • Accountable for accurate forecasting, tracking and adherence to program budgets (headcount and external costs) by liaising with team members. Responsible for challenging and reconciling assumptions, timelines, and expenses on program level.
  • Manages project variance and root cause analysis, and develops risk mitigation / issue management plans with the objective to meet the financial targets
  • Ensures program team operational excellence in terms of meeting conduct, decision making, risk assessment and management, and lessons-learned processes with a commitment to continuous improvement
  • Has excellent written and verbal communications skills; including presentation. 

 

Requirements

  • BS in a scientific discipline required. Advanced degree (e.g., MS, PhD, MBA, MD, PharmD, VMD) strongly preferred. Candidates should possess PMP or advanced project management training/certificate.
  • 15+ years in the life-sciences, pharmaceutical industry, with at least 10 years’ experience in program and portfolio leadership and management in the context of pharmaceutical product development, ideally including cell therapy product development.
  • Demonstrated deep knowledge and expertise in program management.
  • Adaptive leadership style, and ability to guide and influence multidisciplinary teams without formal authority.
  • Previous people management experience required along with a passion for employee development.
  • Highly collaborative orientation with outstanding communication and relationship management skills, and high emotional intelligence.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for bridging scientific and business constituents, negotiating timelines, and effective collaboration.

Role will be hired at level commensurate with experience.
